Music has the potential to make a significant contribution to children’s development, increasing confidence and self-esteem, developing leadership, promoting team working, concentration and problem-solving skills, and developing identity and improving social cohesion within the school and wider community.  It is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement.  

Music is an integral part of life at all our schools. Music lessons are fun and inspiring, engaging the children with songs, lyrics and movement. We want children to feel able and reflective and expressive, developing their own appreciation of music with the opportunities we provide.  All children are actively encouraged and given the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument whether it be within music lessons, or lessons delivered by Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust. 

Children sing everyday in school, whether it is the 'School Song', modern music or traditional hymns. Our children love singing and expressing themselves through music. We also hold many performances in our schools including Christmas plays & Leavers shows where the children learn various songs and perform in both small and large settings.

All schools within our federation have also taken part in the 'Big Sing' which is held in Northampton Derngate Theatre. Schools from across the County are invited to take part. This gives our children a fantastic experience of singing on a large stage in front of a huge audience. 

We use the Charanga scheme of work which offers a topic-based approach to support children’s learning in music.  The scheme offers a practical, structured resource bank for teaching music and contains lessons, songs, warm ups and a range of other musical activities that support every aspect of musical learning in the primary school. A steady progression overview which links where possible to curriculum themes has been devised to ensure consistent musical development across each phase.
