Curriculum Enrichment

Educational Visits and Residential Trips

School trips and visits are an integral part of the education of children at Gayton Primary School.  We value the opportunities such visits offer our pupils and the commitment of staff and adults to undertake them.  Trips include class day trips, Federation days, whole school trips and sporting events. These experiences are aimed at bringing learning alive and providing first-hand experiences in different locations. We also like to welcome special visitors into the classrooms as part of our curriculum enrichment offer. These include historical actors, specialist teachers and local artists.

Children in Years 4 and 6 take part in residential visits. These are planned to provide new and exciting experiences for children as well as develop essential life skills.

Forest School

What is Forest School?

Forest school is an exciting educational experience for children in the natural environment, offering an innovative approach to outdoor play and learning. Forest School is guided by the following principles outlined by the Forest School Association:

  • Principle 1: Forest school is a long-term process of frequent and regular sessions in a woodland or natural environment, rather than a one-off visit. Planning, adaptation, observation and reviewing are integral elements of Forest School.
  • Principle 2: Forest school takes place in a woodland or natural wooded environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.
  • Principle 3: Forest school aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners
  • Principle 4: Forest school offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
  • Principle 5: Forest school is run by qualified Forest School practitioners who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.
  • Principle 6: Forest school uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for development and learning

All children from Reception to Year 6 enjoy termly sessions with Acorn Forest Schools at Salcey Forest.

Swimming Lessons

All children in Year 5 and 6 take part in swimming lessons at Towcester Leisure Centre, which are fully funded by the school. The children develop their swimming strokes (front crawl, breaststroke, back stroke and butterfly) as well as learning valuable lifesaving skills. These sessions are thoroughly enjoyed by all children.

Sport at Gayton Primary School

The Federation staff work alongside coaches from Rhino Sports Academy to offer the children a wide range of sporting experiences, varying from traditional school games (such as netball, football, tag-rugby) through to archery, performing arts and dance. The children regularly come together with their peers from across the Federation for interschool competitions where the atmosphere is always fun. The school also competes within the local area and at regional school competitions. The children cherish the experience of representing their school at these events.
